So, I’ve been itching to get into Warhammer 40k for a while now. A good friend of mine swears by the miniatures and the lore is just chef’s kiss. But diving headfirst into the hobby can be daunting, so when I saw Hachette’s Combat Patrol Magazine subscription, it seemed like the perfect way in. Easy monthly installments, all the bits to build a small force… what could go wrong?
Well, turns out a lot.
Let me preface this by saying, I’m no stranger to sprue-bashing. I can knock together a miniature faster than you can say “Dakka!” But when issue #11 rolled in with promises of a glorious force… and all I got was FIVE TERMINATORS AND FOUR POTS OF GW PAINT?
Five. Terminators.
I mean, don’t get me wrong, they look mean. And the paints – holy moly, that limited edition ‘Viscous Green’ is gonna make those Orks sing soprano! But where were the tactical squads? The vehicles? Where was my promised battle-ready army?!
Maybe I got a rogue box from the warehouse. Or maybe Hachette decided to start a Terminator cult in their spare time. Whatever the reason, I ended up with five guys – good for holding a line, not so much for flanking maneuvers or outsmarting the enemy.
And the assembly? Let’s just say even I was impressed by how quickly those Terminators popped together. Talk about efficient production!
Look, I’m not bitter. Just… slightly disappointed. But hey, maybe next month I’ll get a decent unit. One can only hope, right?
